MILAZZO is deeply rooted into prehistoric times and was slowly built up along a sinuous and variegated dorsal that stretches out into the Tyrrhenian Sea for 7 km after the earth movements that formed the bold outline of its promontory on the directrix of the Aeolian Islands. Thanks to the splendid climate, the superb, restful panorama of the Archipelago, standing out on the horizon in a myriad of light and colour, can nearly always be seen from here. The exact origin of the city dates back to 716 b.c. when it was founded by Greek colonies from Messana. After centuries of Arab, Norman and Swabian dominion, it also came under the rule of the Aragonese, whose influence can still be seen in the architecture of the castle towers, and finally under the Bourbons. |
